The First Day of the Rest of My Life

Comedian Carlos Mencia is on the Varsity panel tonight on the Dennis Miller show with two academics.

I don't say this very often, but after seeing his performance, my pride in the raza has been knocked down a couple of pegs...

What They're Saying (And What I Say About It): New Pope Edition!

Raelyn sez: "Viva il papa!"
I say: Hey, congrats to the guy, but at age 78, I doubt he'll be "viva"ing much longer. It's always bad when one papal death watch starts and another one begins.

Rick Brookhiser sez: "Benedict XVI is 78 years old. Absent a miracle, that argues for a caretaker, a solidifier, perhaps a transitional figure. If he is lucky, Calvin Coolidge. If he is unlucky, Martin Van Buren."
I say: If I knew my history, I'd know what the hell he was talking about. Seriously, I have the same question a Mennonnite (sp?) gal at the office had yesterday: why get a "transitional" Pope?

Andrew Sullivan sez: "And so the Catholic church accelerates its turn toward authoritarianism, hostility to modernity, assertion of papal supremacy and quashing of internal debate and dissent. We are back to the nineteenth century."
I say: Whoa, whoa, whoa... let's not go that far. Why not shore up the "loose ends" when you have the chance?

Okay, I promised a story some time ago, so here goes. Gather 'round, kids...

I met Jennifer through an online dating site. We'd started exchanging e-mails, then decided to get together a couple of Fridays ago. It started out innocently enough, I met up with her and some friends at a dive bar. We had a couple of beers (Bud for me, Michelob Ultra for her), then went to another bar for some drinking and dancing. And that's when things got interesting.

We both had had a few, and the music and the lights started getting to us. It started with a little kissing, a little grinding, a little more kissing... you get the idea. Then, at the end of the night, Jennifer went to close out her tab. I followed her, and we kept kissing while waiting for the bartender to get to her. (A plus: the first time I ever heard "don't stop" from a woman.) But then, it happened. I was hugging her from behind, when she grabbed each of my hands (left first, then right) and shoved them down the front of her pants, and basically forced me to stimulate her right there.

The story pretty much ends there: we went to our separate homes soon afterwards, and haven't seen each other or talked to each other since. Don't get me wrong, it was enjoyable in the heat of the moment, but the "warm fuzzies" have faded fast since then. Throw in a day-long Catholic young adults conference with talks on relationships and discernment, along with ANOTHER online hookup with a newly-minted 21-year-old, and let's just say that my mind has been all over the place lately when it comes to the opposite sex.

I had a date last night.

It started slow, and ended... well, interestingly. I'll tell you more later.

I have only one request of the blogosphere and other commentators over the next few days.

Please, PLEASE do not try and link the passing of Pope John Paul II and Terri Schaivo.
